Tuscany Bike Tours
The route is characterized by the passage to San Gimignano , known for its towers and the characteristic medieval architecture of the historic center declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. San Gimignano, despite some 19th-20th century interventions, has remained largely intact in its 14th-14th century appearance and represents one of the best examples in Europe of urban organization of the municipal age.
Volterra preserves a remarkable historical center of Etruscan origin of which the Porta all'Arco, the Porta Diana remain, which preserves the blocks of the jambs and most of the walls, built with huge blocks of local stone.
Also of great beauty is the Acropolis, where there are the foundations of two temples, various buildings and some cisterns, numerous hypogea with Roman ruins (the Hemicycle Theater) and medieval buildings such as the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and the Palazzo dei Priori on the square of the same name. Among other things, Volterra is well known for its alabaster manufacturing.
